When Louis R\u00e9ard sought a model to model his new swimming costume, no professional model accepted the challenge. So, R\u00e9ard turned to Micheline Bernardini, a stripper at the Casino de Paris. Bernardini not only accepted, but wore the bikini with ease, attracting the attention of the media and the public. As a tribute to her audacity, she received over 50,000 fan letters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Despite its sensational debut, the bikini was initially banned in several places. In the 1950s, many public beaches and swimming pools in the USA, Italy and Spain banned the use of this swimming costume, considering it too scandalous.
